Feb 25th 2018!⃝I think this is not so much about an old friend he lost contact with, but maybe a new friend he just made. At the beginning, when it says,
"Switch on the sky and the stars glow for you
Go see the world 'cause it's all so brand new

It's just a matter of time, before we learn how to fly", he is telling his friend that they are really special and they are going to do amazing things when they get older.

There's something in the air you can't deny"
But they don't have to worry about the future so soon. Just feel the music and have fun and dance; live in the moment. They're having so much fun.
"Well, it's been fun but now I've got to go
Life is way too short to take it slow
But before I go and hit the road
I gotta know, til then,
When can I see you again?"
He has had a really fun night with his friend and wants to do it again sometime soon. So, not really sad saying, oh goodbye, maybe eventually we'll see each other in many years, but more like next week or so they can go have fun again.

Life is a trip down the road that leads you"
His new friend has other friends that rely on them, and he knows that his friend has to go to them, but he also knows that things change and life leads you in many places, so maybe they'll be able to hang out often.
"Look all around at the mountains you haven't climbed
It's just a matter of time, before we learn how to fly"
There's so much left to do, and they will figure out how to work out their friendship.
The song continues along those lines, asking their new friend to hang out again soon.
