Me personally, thinks that it's a father who has left off for war, what the "Danger Line" is, is the battlefield, and he left his fear there, maybe someone's fear was left on the danger line because they died? That's what I think about that. And he does it for his family, and his daughter obviously loves her dad. So,
"With colors never faded
Reckless and unabated
They may take me but never take us all (I'll crawl)"
probably is him saying he makes a sacrifice for them all.
"When he says I know what you're thinking
I've been there before
So think of the times
The time we spent laughing away
So think of the times at home.."
he's talking to himself trying to comfort himself while trying to live.
"Now I found myself in my own blood
(never thought I'd lay in my own blood)
The damage done is far beyond repair
I never put my faith in up above
(never had much faith in up above)
But now, I'm hoping someone's there.."
He's now bleeding out and he never thought that was going to happen, and "The damage done is far beyond repair" means he knows that he can't live from an injury.
"Never meant to leave this world alone
I never meant to hurt the ones who cared
And all this time I thought we'd just grow old
You know, no one said it's fair"
The first verse means he wanted to die with his family, or with friends. He never meant do die, and that makes his family (the ones who cared) very sad and now they're hurt. And he thought him and his wife would grow old before death, but he was maybe in his 20-30's and didn't get a long life with his wife. And it also means that life isn't fair but he wants his family to move on.
"Tell my baby girl that it's alright, I've sung my last song today.
Remind the Lord to leave his light on for me
I'm free"
The first line means he wants one of his friends to tell his daughter "Your daddy's died." He want's the Lord to leave his fathers light (presence) on for him. When he says he's free, it means that he is in heaven and doesn't have the troubles of life anymore. This is only my interpretation though.
